Waters Unveils New Technology and Ecolabel Certification

Waters Corporation is a global leader in analytical instruments and software. It has pioneered chromatography, mass spectrometry, and thermal analysis innovations serving the life, materials, food, and environmental sciences for more than 65 years. In June and July, the innovative company announced several remarkable achievements. They include a new mass spectrometer (MS), Ecolabel Certification for its liquid chromatography (LC) chemistry, and a new rapid-screening process for antibody drugs.

In early June, officials unveiled the Xevo MRT. The company’s highest-performing benchtop mass spectrometer sets new standards for delivering high resolution and speed, which are critical for large population and epidemiology-type studies. The new Xevo MRT MS combines the raw power and resolution speed of multi-reflecting time-of-flight (MRT) and hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight technologies within a flexible benchtop platform. The Xero MRT “delivers up to 6x resolution at maximum speed and up to 2x mass accuracy of competitive systems, enabling scientists to process more samples in less time for large-cohort biomedical research and epidemiology-type studies,” officials note.

That same month, Waters Corporation announced that more than 40 products within its LC chemistry portfolio had obtained Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency (ACT) Ecolabels from My Green Lab, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a global culture of sustainability in science. The criteria that form the basis for the ACT Ecolabel were crafted with insights from scientists, sustainability directors, procurement specialists, and manufacturers. By emphasizing Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency around manufacturing, energy and water use, packaging, and end-of-life, ACT makes it easy to choose more sustainable products. Waters ACQUITY and CORTECS Chromatography Columns are the first such products to earn the ACT Ecolabel from My Green Lab following a rigorous third-party verification process.

"Today, sustainability is very much a part of our customers' decision-making process. Certifying Waters columns with ACT Ecolabels makes it easier for customers to make an environmentally conscious choice without having to sacrifice analytical performance and results," according to Erin Chambers, Vice President, Consumables and Lab Automation, Waters Corporation. "We have always been committed to helping customers find the right chromatography column to solve their separation challenges. Over the years, innovations like MaxPeak Premier High-Performance Surfaces and CORTECS Solid Core Particles have delivered very high robustness and efficiency to the analytical laboratory. It is a real point of pride for us to be leading the way as the first vendor to provide ACT Ecolabels for our LC columns."

In late July, the company released its TA Instruments Rapid Screening-Differential Scanning Calorimeter (TA Instruments RS-DSC). The device is designed for use by biopharmaceutical developers. The TA Instruments RS-DSC offers precise thermal stability testing of high-concentration biologic formulations specifically for antibody drugs and engineered proteins. Its features include state-of-the-art automated software that provides rapid, effortless, precise, and in-depth insights about a sample's thermodynamic properties.

"Demand is increasing for higher concentration injectable drugs, and biologic developers are looking for stability testing that is fast and efficient," according to Jianqing Bennett, Waters Corporation Senior Vice President of the TA Instruments Division. "Our new Rapid Screening-DSC meets these needs by providing a high-throughput alternative to existing capillary DSCs and a more reliable and accurate option to differential scanning fluorescence technologies."

The company became a Hacienda tenant in November 2008. Waters has approximately 7,700 employees worldwide and operates directly in 35 countries. The company has 15 manufacturing facilities globally and sells products in more than 100 countries. For more information about Waters Corporation, please visit www.waters.com/nextgen/us/en.html.
